registered by Joseph Hiester in 1780 were Pero, a boy
13 years of age, and Dina, a girl 14 years old; but
in 1805 Joseph Hiester entered the name of Charles,
the “son of Dinah,” born March 16, 1805.

Among the records of the court of general quarter
sessions of the peace, in and for the county of
Berks, it is thus contained:

Joseph Hiester, Esquire, of the borough of Read-
ing
, in the county of Berks, maketh oath, that
Charles, (son of Dinah), A MULATTO OR NEGRO
SLAVE, the PROPERTY of the said Joseph, was born
on or about the the 16th day of March last, and now en
ters him agreeably to law.
JOSEPH HIESTER.”
Sworn and subscribed, August 16th, 1806, coram
me.

I, John Addams, clerk of the court
of quarter sessions of the peace, in
and for Berks county, do hereby cer-
tify that the foregoing contains a full
and entire copy of the record of the
entry of all the SLAVES REGISTERED
BY JOSEPH HIESTER in the office of the clerk of the
said court; and that it does NOT appear from any
record in the aforesaid office, that ANY OF THE SAID
SLAVES have been EMANCIPATED.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand
and affixed the seal of the said court at Reading,
this second day of September, A.D. one thous-
and eight hundred and twenty.
